Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
May 18th, 2021 marks the renewal of the agreement between the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD-France) and the Institut Pasteur. Building on several years of collaboration, the two institutions have thus reaffirmed their desire to act together for their common health research missions.
In France, in overseas territories, in Europe but also in several countries of the intertropical and Mediterranean zone, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development -IRD – and the Institut Pasteur are, by the establishment of their respective network, key players in the French research strategy to help advance global health. Long-time united for the benefit of populations’s health, the two institutions, alongside the association Pasteur International Network, signed a framework agreement on May 18th, 2021, strengthening their close collaboration for a better duration of 4 years.
The collaboration between the IRD’s and the Institut Pasteur’s networks has already demonstrated its attachment to a so-called “One Health” approach. In East Asia, it is in particular dengue and leptospirosis that are at the heart of the ECOMORE 2 ( ECOsystem MOdification and emerging infectious diseases Risk Evaluation) program. In the regions around the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Sahel, vector-borne diseases are the target of the MediLabSecure 2. project. Improving hepatitis B vaccination coverage has also been able to benefit from the esprit de corps of two structures thanks to the NeoVac multicenter program. Finally, at the invitation of the IRD, the Institut Pasteur was able to join the "France Team" of the international PREZODE initiative (Prévenir les risques d’émergences zoonotiques et de pandémies* ), which promotes a “One Health” approach.
By renewing this agreement, their mutual will is to go further. Further in multidisciplinarity by also working in the field of human and social sciences. Further in the cross-mobilities of researchers between the IRD and the Institut Pasteur by promoting the setting up of 4-year research groups, the G4, or young teams associated with the IRD, the JEAI. Further in the fight against bacterial resistance to treatments with participation in the "Priority Research Program on Antibiotic-Multi-Resistance" and also in taking advantage of the co-location of structures in no less than 15 countries.
The fight against emerging diseases, neglected tropical diseases, pandemics, capacity building of partner laboratories and academic training are all missions that are part of the partnership dynamic dear to the two institutions and reaffirmed at the signing of this framework agreement.
"The signing of this agreement comes in a context marked by a health crisis, which reminds us of the importance of joining forces, pooling our resources and capitalizing on existing and already operating networks to gain in efficiency and responsiveness. The Institut Pasteur is therefore particularly pleased to enter into this new partnership with the IRD”, explains Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur.
