Register for the third edition of the "HIV Science" MOOC

The online courses division is pleased to invite you to sign up for the third edition of the "HIV Science" MOOC, from March 15 to May 10, 2022, led by Michaela Müller-Trutwin and Asier Sáez-Cirión.

Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, the virus has infected more than 79 million people and caused more than 36 million deaths. HIV replication can now be effectively controlled with antiretroviral treatments. Deaths linked to AIDS have been halved since 2010. But HIV infection remains a major global public health problem. A third of those living with HIV do not have access to antiretroviral treatment. There is currently no cure for HIV, and patients need to remain on antiretroviral treatment for life. This MOOC examines various aspects of HIV infection: its biological origins and identification as the causal agent of AIDS, the current epidemiological situation, progress in knowledge on viral persistence and host immune responses, vaccine candidates, eradication strategies and community prospects, with contributions from international experts in the respective fields.

10 sessions have been updated for this latest edition.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
•    Summarize the global situation regarding the HIV epidemic.
•    Identify the immune mechanisms that combat the virus and understand how HIV is able to bypass them.
•    Describe the specific characteristics of the very rare individuals that can control infection and animal models of spontaneous protection.
•    Outline the current state of scientific knowledge on viral reservoirs and post-treatment control.
•    Explain the clinical management approach to HIV infection.
•    Discuss future prospects in terms of treatment and prevention.
