Pint of Science, Double•Science Festival: a month of May packed with science activities open to the public

Like the many other initiatives that you will have read about in the newsletter in recent years aimed at opening science to society, two events involving the Institut Pasteur are currently under preparation and promise to bring us a month of May brimming with science!

  • Pint of Science – May 22 to 24

The Pint of Science concept was invented in 2012 by two London-based scientists. When they opened the doors of their laboratory to the public, they found that people were curious and fascinated by science. So they decided to look for a way to repeat the experience – and the idea they came up with was to take science and scientists away from their labs and bring them to the pub! That was the beginning of Pint of Science.

For the 2023 edition, the concept will be taken to a number of bars in Paris (and other towns and cities across France). In the "Le trait d'union" bar (122 rue de Rennes, 75006 Paris), from 7 to 9.30pm on May 22-24, several Institut Pasteur scientists will be on hand to meet members of the public as part of the Pint of Science event. The program will be as follows:

Monday May 22: Nicolás Rascovan, Head of the Microbial Paleogenomics Unit, and Javier Pizarro, Head of the Yersinia Unit at the Institut Pasteur, will speak on the topic "Secrets of our past and our health revealed by science"

Tuesday May 23: Aleksandra Deczkowska, Head of the Brain-Immune Communication five-year group, and Gérard Eberl, Head of the Microenvironment and Immunity Unit, will speak (in English) on the topic "Ménage à trois: Gut, brain and microbiota"

Wednesday May 24: Elisa Gomez Perdiguero, Head of the Macrophages and Endothelial Cells Unit, and Michel Cohen-Tannoudji, leader of the Early Mammalian Development & Stem Cell Biology group, will speak on the topic "The promise of stem cells in regenerative medicine"

Feel free to sign up from April 17 when tickets become available!

  • Double•Science Festival – May 26 to 28

Double•Science is a free popular science festival for people of all ages and backgrounds, giving members of the public the opportunity to come and find out about science, have fun and even become actively involved in knowledge creation!

For its first edition, the event, jointly organized by "Le Café des Sciences," "L'Exploratoire" and the French Society of Physics, and partnered by the Institut Pasteur, will take place from May 26 to 28, 2023 at Ground Control (Paris). The theme will be "150 years of physics" (in connection with the 150th anniversary of the French Society of Physics), although other scientific disciplines will be covered too.

The event promises to be packed full of different activities, including scientific experiments, book signings, "music and science" stage performances, workshops, mini-conferences, cinematic experiences, serious games, exhibitions, meetings with scientists and round tables.
