Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors – the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) – contains a special feature on microscopy, a vital tool that enables scientists to see the details of living systems and gives them a better chance in their efforts to tackle diseases.
With the naked eye, humans can make out a detail measuring roughly 1mm from a distance of 3 meters. The world's most powerful microscope, the Titan Krios™, magnifies objects millions of times (compared with the first microscopes, which magnified by a factor of just ten) and shows what is occurring at atomic level. Scientists investigating diseases now have access to an entire range of highly sophisticated microscopes which are often an essential prerequisite for their research. This month's LIP travels back in time, telling the story of the extraordinary development of microscopes and how they have enabled us to discover the infinitely small details of the living world. Microscopes have become vital technological allies of biomedical research.
