Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
Dear Colleagues,
A few weeks after taking office as President of the Institut Pasteur and following the appointment of the Scientific Director, I made a series of proposals to the Board of Directors with the aim of improving the organization of our institute. The Board of Directors approved these proposals at its meeting on March 5.
The new measures reflect my efforts to clarify the lines of authority within the management team with the aim of facilitating decision-making, bringing together three of the Institut Pasteur's four key missions – research, health and education – within the Department of Scientific Affairs, and providing a framework for the Institut Pasteur to operate smoothly and effectively on a daily basis, for the benefit of all staff.
Four departments will report directly to the President: the Department of Communications and Fundraising, the Deputy Directorate General for Administration and Finance, the International Affairs Department and the Department of Scientific Affairs.
The Scientific Director will be responsible for the Departments of Technology, Development, Scientific Assessment, Scientific Careers, Education, and Medical Affairs and Public Health, as well as the Scientific Secretariat General. This will facilitate interaction among these departments within an overarching structure, coordinated by the Scientific Director.
To simplify and facilitate the operation of the new organizational structure, an Executive Board (COMEX) will be set up. This board, which will focus on operational matters, will be composed of a number of members who report directly to me. The Vice-President Research Applications and Industrial Relations will also sit on this committee, since I see business development – the Institut Pasteur's fourth key mission – as an operational and strategic priority. I will convene this Executive Board every two weeks, alternating with the Senior Management Board (CODIR).
The responsibilities of the Deputy Directorate General for Administration and Finance remain the same; it will continue to oversee the following departments: Research Applications and Industrial Relations, Financial Affairs, Human Resources, Legal Affairs, Technical Resources and Environment, and Information Systems.

At the same meeting of the Board of Directors, two other proposals were also accepted:
The appointment of Professor Christophe d'Enfert to lead the Department of Technology and the Department of Development, with the primary goal of making improvements to some of their activities. I was keen to give a new direction to these two departments, but I would like to express my thanks to Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin and Pierre Legrain, who set up the Department of Technology and the Department of Development respectively, for their outstanding work.
The appointment of Samuel Valcke as Vice-President Legal Affairs. More details of this appointment will follow in a separate message.
I am convinced that these developments will enable us to pursue the year 2018 confidently and successfully, as we embark with determination and efficiency on the task of drawing up a new five-year strategic plan.
Please be assured that in spite of the difficult budgetary context, I am committed to doing all that is in my power to strengthen the Institut Pasteur's standing in France and at international level and to continue to promote the excellence of its research.
Regards,
Stewart Cole,
President
