Appointment of Ray Schinazi as Affiliated Professor: invitation to the ceremony on April 23, 2018

In 2017, the Institut Pasteur appointed Ray Schinazi as Affiliated Professor at the Institut Pasteur. Ray Schinazi, Director of the Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology at Emory University, Atlanta, is a leading researcher in the field of nucleoside chemistry. For 35 years he has been working at Emory on a number of different viruses: herpes, HIV, hepatitis B and C, and dengue. Ray Schinazi is particularly recognized for his pioneering role in drug development, especially for AIDS and hepatitis B and C. He played a key part in the development of the first antiretroviral drugs for AIDS, which are still used today. He was also closely involved in the development of a new molecule to treat hepatitis C, Sofosbuvir, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2013. Ray Schinazi has become particularly well known for the way he has been able to transfer his scientific discoveries to both industrial and clinical applications, resulting in the filing of patents for more than 12 new drugs.

On April 23 at 5.30pm, the Institut Pasteur will be holding a ceremony to mark the appointment of Ray Schinazi as Affiliated Professor at the Institut Pasteur. This event will take place in the François Jacob auditorium. The ceremony will include a brief presentation by Ray Schinazi of his research. It will be followed by a drinks reception in the Salle des Actes.

The Institut Pasteur introduced the status of Affiliated Professor in 2016 with the aim of formally recognizing various leading scientists who are professors at their home establishment for higher education and research and are also closely involved in work for the Institut Pasteur or collaborative activities with its teams, but are not in a position to be recruited by the institute. The title of Affiliated Professor may be proposed for a leading scientist who has given the Institut Pasteur the benefit of his or her expertise and reputation and contributed to the Institut Pasteur's visibility and renown in a specific field. The title is a way for the Institut Pasteur to show its appreciation and recognition of the work carried out by these professors.
