Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
Several Institut Pasteur scientists have recently been recognized for their research or their work as members of organizations in the science and research community.
Each year, the Distinguished Service Award is given to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the IEEE EMBS. The EMBS is the world's largest international society of biomedical engineers, with a vast community of members who enjoy access to an extensive network and a wealth of information in the field of biomedicine.
This year, Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin, Head of the Bioimage Analysis Unit, received the 2019 IEEE EMBS Distinguished Service Award.

The aim of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is to promote excellence in biology by supporting talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulating dialog and promoting the development of an outstanding scientific environment in the field of life sciences.
Some 50 to 60 researchers, leaders in their field, join EMBO each year after being elected in a highly selective process by the organization's members. Together with the other members, they play a fundamental role in organizing and influencing the direction of European biology research.
Recently, the prestigious organization announced the election of 48 new members, including Thomas Gregor, Head of the Physics of Biological Function Unit.
Since 2007, the Pasteur Vallery-Radot Prize has been awarded annually to two French Institut Pasteur scientists under the age of 50 who have led a major scientific project in the field of biology or physics/chemistry over the last five years, thus proving themselves to be worthy heirs of Pasteur himself. Winners are chosen by a panel of Institut Pasteur and French Academy of Sciences members, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences.
This year, the National Library of France (BnF) awarded the Pasteur Vallery-Radot Prize to Guillaume Duménil, Head of the Pathogenesis of Vascular Infections Unit, and Rogerio Amino, Head of the Malaria Infection & Immunity Unit. The winners were invited by BnF President Laurence Engel to receive their awards on June 13, 2019, at a ceremony attended by Daniel Louvard, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, and Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur.
The French Academy of Sciences' "Major advances in French biology research" award, endowed by the Mergier Bourdeix Foundation, goes to six young researchers who made major scientific breakthroughs in the field of biology in 2018 or 2019.
The Academy of Sciences will hold a special public session in the Grande Salle des Séances at the Institut de France during which the winners, introduced by their research supervisor, will present the research that earned them the award.
Daria Bonazzi, accompanied by her research supervisor Guillaume Duménil, Head of the Pathogenesis of Vascular Infections Unit, will present the topic "Bacteria behave collectively as a viscous liquid to infect blood vessels more effectively".
The event is open to all but prior registration is required.
