Gold medal for the Institut Pasteur's 2016 iGEM team

logo-definitif.png The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition was set up to promote research in the area of synthetic biology. This annual competition was launched in 2004 by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the United States. In 2015, the Institut Pasteur decided to take up the challenge for the first time by setting up its own team and submitting the PlastiCure project.

dsc_7960.jpg This year, a new team was set up, comprising around twenty students in a wide variety of fields including biology, chemistry, physics, political science and industrial design. This diversity proved to be a real strength for the Mos(kit)o project, which was particularly committed to the notion of "Human Practices", an approach that focuses on sustainable development and responsible research (Synenergene 2016 Award).

In October, the team headed to Boston for the annual Giant Jamboree, held from October 27 to 31, where they gave an oral presentation to a panel and took part in a poster session and workshops. With the support of several of the supervisors from the Institut Pasteur (scientists, post-doctoral fellows and PhD students) and from ENSCI, the team shared its expertise and know-how as it promoted its project.

For this second participation by the Institut Pasteur, the team of students behind the project (BTS advanced technical diploma students at the ETSL, Bachelor's/Master's students from Pierre and Marie Curie University (UPMC) and Paris Diderot, law students at Paris Jean Monnet - Saclay, engeeniring at ESPCI, or industrial design at ENSCI-Les Ateliers) were awarded the gold medal and the prize for the Best Diagnostics Project, the Best Applied Design Project and the Best Supporting Entrepreneurship Project.

Congratulations to the team, who will be able to build on this success as they inspire participation in future iGEM challenges and continue to develop enthusiasm for this competition on the Paris campus.
