Check out the first Annual Report of the reConnect Institute for hearing and speech disorders

The 2024 Annual Report by the reConnect Institute, a foundation under the aegis of the Institut Pasteur, was published this summer. Check out the report to read about reConnect's activities in the areas of research, healthcare, innovation and teaching, the key events that reflect its missions, and the people working in this new University Hospital Institute established in 2024 to focus on hearing and speech disorders.

An integrative approach for the benefit of patients

Rooted in an integrative approach that considers the broad links between hearing, the brain and speech, the reConnect Institute has an interdisciplinary team whose members include scientists, clinicians, healthcare professionals, industry partners and patient organizations, all focused on tackling future challenges in the field of hearing and speech disorders. As Anne-Lise Giraud, Director of the reConnect Institute, explains, "this year we have laid solid foundations for the future by strengthening the collaborative dynamic among our community. Together, and with the help of our three partner hospitals, we are aiming to revolutionize treatment for patients with deafness, hearing loss or speech communication disorders."

The report sets out the achievements in 2024 of the various project groups working on areas such as new treatments and therapies for sudden deafness and fluctuating hearing loss, the characterization and treatment of auditory perception disorders, and hearing and auditory dysfunction in cognitive disorders, with the aim of bringing about significant improvements to patients' quality of life.

Yasmine Belkaid, President of the foundation that hosts the reConnect Institute, discussed the work of this University Hospital Institute: "Working on hearing means making the invisible visible and tackling a crucial social challenge: enabling people to live longer, healthier lives, while also addressing these disorders from the start of life – two priorities that are central to the Pasteur 2030 Strategic Plan." This alignment with the Institut Pasteur's vision highlights the role of the reConnect Institute as a driver of research for the 2.5 billion people who will be affected by hearing disorders by 2050 (according to WHO estimates).
