At the meeting of the Scientific Council on June 3 and 4, 2025, the members elected Caroline Demangel as Chair of the Scientific Council for a two-year term. She takes over from Jean-Marc Ghigo, whose term had expired.
Caroline Demangel is a Professor at the Institut Pasteur, where she heads the Immunobiology and Therapy Unit in the Department of Immunology. A graduate of the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon, she obtained a PhD in Biochemistry in 1993. She was introduced to Immunology during two postdoctoral periods, first at the Institut Pasteur and then at the Centenary Institute in Sydney, Australia. Appointed staff scientist, she returned to the Institut Pasteur in 2002 to develop a research centered on immune evasion by mycobacteria. In 2011, she became director of the Immunobiology et Thérapy Unit that studies the immunomodulation mechanisms evolved by bacteria and translates fundamental insights into novel vaccines and treatments. She chaired the first “Women in Science” committee of Institut Pasteur (2018-2020) and animated the Emerging Infectious Disease research priority axis (2019-2023).
An elected member and then co-president of the COMESP (2016-2020), she was an elected member and co-president of the Scientific Council in 2023.
On the occasion of this election, Gerald Spaeth became the Vice President, and Eduardo Rocha became the secretary of the Scientific Council.
