The Department of Neuroscience is pleased to invite Serge Tisseron to give a lecture at 10.30am on Thursday July 9 in the François Jacob auditorium, entitled: "AI, an embarrassing social actor: pleading for a no-holds-barred dialog between humans and simulated humans." The lecture is open to all Institut Pasteur staff and is aimed at both scientists and anyone with an interest in the subject. It will be in French only.

The seminar is free of charge and no prior registration is required.

Serge Tisseron is a psychiatrist and doctor of psychology with accreditation to supervise research in clinical humanities. He is a member of the French Academy of Technologies and the National Council for AI and Digital Technology, as well as the Scientific Board of the Psychoanalysis, Medicine and Society Research Center at Université Paris Cité. He is a prolific author and has published around 40 individual essays and 15 co-authored books. More than half of his publications focus on our relationships with technological objects, especially those that we use through the interface of a screen.

A summary of Serge Tisseron's lecture

From birth, humans learn by imitation and repetition, through constant interactions with their environment. But we are now increasingly encouraged to interact with AIs that offer availability and empathy in all life's circumstances, from relationships and family issues to social and professional situations. What impact will this have on the way we develop our identity and relationships, the way we think and perceive what is real? And also, since humans created AI, what can it teach us about ourselves?
