Joël has both extensive expertise in infectious diseases and global health and a proven ability to develop and lead large-scale international projects and partnerships. In his roles in various complex projects and organizations, he has shown great skill in bringing together stakeholders in research and industry. He shares our ambition to accelerate the impact of scientific innovation for the benefit of patients. Joël Lelièvre is taking over a department that plays a central role in the Institut Pasteur's scientific strategy. Together with his team, he will help steer the Institut Pasteur's major discoveries on a path towards patients and society."

Yasmine Belkaid, Institut Pasteur President

Joël Lelièvre holds a PhD in Parasitology and Biomolecular Chemistry from the University of Toulouse and an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. He has more than 18 years' experience at the intersection of basic research, translational science and industry partnerships in the fields of infectious diseases and global health. His career took him to the international biopharmaceutical group GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where in 2008 he became principal investigator (PI) of a scientific and translational project to establish drug discovery platforms for tuberculosis and malaria. In this role, he developed close long-term links with academic partners, NGOs and funders. In 2016, still at GSK, he became Biology Manager in the Drugs for the Developing Unit (DDW). In this capacity he led multidisciplinary scientific teams and was responsible for various external collaborations. His responsibilities also involved selecting and maturing projects via an approach that balanced compliance with intellectual property, business development and corporate strategy. Since 2019, Joël Lelièvre has been Executive Head of External and Internal Innovation Strategy, Partnerships and Funding in the GSK Global Health R&D Division and also in the Openlab foundation. In this role he has led major consortia funded by the European Union, international foundations and NGOs, including ERA4TB, PanTB, Click-TB and AnTBiotic. He has also supervised innovation platforms and collaborations to support pandemic preparedness and response.

The Vice-President DARRI will report to the President and work closely with the Scientific Affairs Division to help define and implement the Institut Pasteur's medium- and long-term business development strategy. With the support and expertise of all the DARRI teams, Joël Lelièvre will be responsible for leading major technology transfer projects and strategic alliances and for maximizing the resources derived from business development. He will pay particular attention to the invention detection, development and protection strategy, as well as the development of collaborations with new industry partners in France and abroad.
