Anne Dejean, winner of the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2026

On May 27, the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine 2026 was awarded in equal shares to Anne Dejean, Professor Emeritus at the Institut Pasteur and Emeritus Director of Research at Inserm, Hugues de Thé, Professor and Chair of Cellular and Molecular Oncology at the Collège de France and Zhu Chen, Professor at Ruijin Hospital in the School of Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (People's Republic of China) for the discovery of the molecular and cellular bases of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) and the pioneering of a synergistic targeted therapy that transformed the disease from one of the most deadly to one of the most curable cancers.

Anne Dejean, Hugues de Thé, and Zhu Chen are awarded the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for their ground breaking discoveries elucidating the mechanisms responsible for APL and the development of a curative combination drug therapy. The treatment is currently one of the most efficient targeted therapies for human cancer, with an over 90% cure rate.

This prestigious recognition honours an exceptional scientific career as well as the importance of basic research, international scientific cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration in the service of global health.
