CeRIS cinema club: retrospective for World Malaria Day

The Scientific Information Resources Center (CeRIS) will be running a cinema club for World Malaria Day featuring two documentaries from its DVD collection that were produced with the help of Institut Pasteur scientists.

The documentaries will be screened on Thursday April 25, 2019, at 11.30am and 1.30pm, in the Jules Bordet room (on the ground floor of the Metchnikoff building (building 67)).

Program:

  • 11.30am: Anophèle prédateur, directed by Jean-Luc Miheaye in 2011 (52 mins)

We take you on a short trip back in time to 2011, when malaria was considered as a neglected disease – despite the World Health Organization publishing these alarming figures: every 30 seconds, someone dies of malaria somewhere in the world, and the 300 to 500 million clinical cases each year claim 2 to 3 million lives, 90% of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. The documentary provides an overview of malaria from a medical, scientific and economic perspective. It includes contributions from Pierre Druilhe, former Head of the Medical Parasitology Unit at the Institut Pasteur.

  • 1.30pm: Invasion moustiques, directed by Patrice Desenne and Frédéric Létang in 2016 (53 mins)

In Brazil, Africa, South-East Asia and southern Europe, four mosquito species are spreading dangerous viruses and parasites to humans. As vectors for dengue, malaria and other infectious diseases, they use climate change, population movements and mass transportation to their advantage to expand their geographical range. They resist strategies introduced by humans to protect themselves. But there are scientists working in the field, experimenting with new and often surprising techniques to combat them.
The film was co-produced by Grand Angle, the Institut Pasteur and the French Research Institute for Development (IRD). It features the work of Anna-Bella Failloux and the teams at the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC). Didier Fontenille, Director of the IPC, served as scientific advisor for the film.
