SOLIDARITY

Ukraine conflict: the latest on our action in support of the scientists and people of Ukraine

The Institut Pasteur stands alongside Ukraine, and since the beginning of March it has voiced its support for the Ukrainian people and scientific community in response to the military invasion of their country by Russia. (see the press dispatch from March 4)

Over and above its expressions of solidarity, the Institut Pasteur has introduced several specific measures to support the Ukrainian people and scientists, especially by proposing to host scientists and organizing a collection of essential supplies on campus.

1/ Hosting Ukrainian scientists

The call for applications launched by the Institut Pasteur on March 22 led to an outpouring of solidarity on campus, with more than 60 research units offering to host a Ukrainian scientist. The scheme has already started to show results, with several PIs receiving initial applications. The call was widely publicized thanks to the https://scienceforukraine.eu/ website and the #ScienceForUkraine hashtag, two initiatives that have boosted the international visibility of the scheme and helped match requests with offers to host scientists.

Under the Institut Pasteur's scheme, each candidate contacts the PI directly by email, and the PI exchanges messages with the scientist to assess the relevance of the application and whether the laboratory is in a position to work with him/her. The PI then submits the application and the proposal to the management team for approval.

So far, six applications have already been approved, with the students/scientists either on their way from Ukraine or Poland or already in France.

The newsletter team will give you regular updates on the latest news regarding the hosting program.

2/ Participation in the international solidarity effort – collection still ongoing

For three weeks now, a collection of goods and equipment has been held on campus from Monday to Friday, 12 noon to 2pm, on the ground floor of the CIS building.

The collection is organized in conjunction with the mairie (town hall) in Paris' 15th arrondissement, which will be responsible for sending the items to Ukraine. Thanks to your daily contributions, a large number of food products, personal and general hygiene items and cleaning products have been collected. The first drop-off of collected items at the town hall took place yesterday, Thursday April 7. 15 boxes (more than 200 kg) will soon be on their way to Ukraine.

The collection is still ongoing and you can still come and donate items between 12 noon and 2pm on the ground floor of the CIS building. The organizers would particularly encourage you to donate general hygiene and cleaning products if possible (sponges, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, gloves, tissues, toilet paper, etc.).

As well as the collection held on campus, there are of course various other ways in which you can support the people of Ukraine. Below you will find a link to a non-exhaustive list of organizations, associations and foundations involved in helping Ukrainians still in the country or fleeing as refugees; monitoring the developing situation; or investigating and taking action to protect human rights in Ukraine. A donation to one of these bodies is a way of showing support on an individual level. This initiative – led and supported by "France générosité," of which the Institut Pasteur is a member –, is designed to help you donate safely.
