CORONAVIRUS

Updated estimate of the proportion of the population infected by SARS-CoV-2

Throughout the pandemic, scientists and modelers have developed methods to estimate the proportion of the population that has been infected by SARS-CoV-2. This estimation work is important as it provides an idea of the proportion of the population that may have acquired immunity to SARS-CoV-2 (at least partial, short-term immunity) following natural infection. But it can be a difficult task because the available data on cases, hospitalizations and deaths only actually reflects a small proportion of the total number of infections. Serosurveys are therefore a vital tool.
