Impact of the Zika virus outbreak among the general population in French Guiana

During the 2016 outbreak, the Zika virus (ZIKV) circulated in the vast majority of French Guiana, but not in the most isolated forest regions of Upper Maroni and Upper Oyapock. Research by scientists at the Institut Pasteur de la Guyane and the Institut Pasteur Paris led to an estimate of overall seroprevalence of 23.3%, varying from 0% to 45.6% depending on the town or village. A total of 25.5% of people infected with ZIKV reported having experienced characteristic symptoms during the period the virus was circulating in the French overseas department. The research, based on a large-scale survey among the general population over the whole of French Guiana from June to October 2017 (the EPI-ARBO survey), is published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
