"Creating your own company" session on December 19

The Institut Pasteur runs a monthly event offering PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, scientists and engineers interested in entrepreneurship and business development the chance to meet leading figures and entrepreneurs in the area of life sciences.

These informal events, entitled "Creating your own company", take the form of a breakfast meeting on the first Tuesday of each month.

The next session will take place at 8.30am on Tuesday December 19, in room 28-01-01A of the François Jacob building. The speaker will be Stéphane Bancel.

s_bancel.jpg Stephane Bancel is the CEO of Moderna Therapeutics, a start-up created in 2010, focusing on the development of a new class of medicines made of messenger RNA. Founded six years ago, Moderna has already raised nearly $2 billion from investors, but also from licensing collaborations. It is a biotech unicorn, with an estimated value of approximately $4.7 billion.

Moderna Therapeutics works on various therapeutic projects, all based on a messenger RNA platform: therapeutic vaccines, prophylactic vaccines against infectious diseases, clinical trials, etc. For several of these projects, Moderna has partnered with Astra Zeneca and Merck.

Before joining Moderna, Stéphane Bancel was CEO of bioMérieux, a world leader in the diagnostics industry. Prior to his time at bioMérieux, Mr. Bancel was the managing director of Eli Lilly Belgium. He holds a Master's degree in Engineering from École Central Paris, a Master's of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Stephane Bancel was named Ernst & Young 2017 New England Entrepreneur of the Year.
