40 YEARS OF HIV

Meeting Professor Anthony Fauci: "inspirational" conversations

On November 29, just before the opening of the conference "40 years of HIV science," at which he was a highly anticipated speaker, Professor Anthony Fauci, an eminent immunologist and former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), gave a series of interviews to the Institut Pasteur.

Speaking to members of the Department of Communications and the Department of Education, as well as a dozen PhD students, the scientist discussed the 40th anniversary of the discovery of HIV and also answered several questions in which he shared his expertise and thoughts on the challenges of pandemics, the role of science in preparing for the unexpected (as reflected in his book "Expect the Unexpected"), the importance of communicating more effectively with the general public and the need to pass on knowledge to the scientists of the future.

A dozen PhD students and postdoctoral fellows had the privilege of talking to Anthony Fauci over a coffee – a memorable experience for them all! Prior to the discussion, he recorded a video that will be included in the Institut Pasteur's "Viral Outbreaks and Pandemics: a One Health Concept" MOOC and the Université Paris Cité Graduate School "One Health – Emerging Infectious Diseases (1H-EID) program." These were unique opportunities to share knowledge and compare perspectives.
