Funding PhDs with Industrial Agreements for Training Through Research

The MAASCC welcome and support structure for contract researchers, the Research Applications and Industrial Relations Department and the Education Department are running a seminar on how to fund PhDs through the French CIFRE scheme (Industrial Agreements for Training Through Research) on Friday February 24 at 2pm in the François Jacob auditorium.

Whether you are a Master's student or a scientist in an Institut Pasteur laboratory or start-up, come along and find out about the Industrial Agreements for Training Through Research scheme.

For more than 30 years, the CIFRE scheme has provided grants for French companies that hire PhD students under a partnership arrangement with a state-funded laboratory. The aim is to strengthen links between public research laboratories and socio-economic sectors, to improve employment possibilities for recent PhD graduates in companies, and to boost innovation in French businesses. The research carried out by the students leads to a thesis that is submitted and defended within three years.

The CIFRE scheme brings together four partners:

  • a company, which gives a PhD student a research mission that forms the basis of his or her thesis;

  • a laboratory, independent from the company, which offers scientific supervision for the student;

  • a PhD student who already holds a Master's degree;

  • the ANRT (French National Association for Research in Technology), which enters into an Industrial Agreement for Training Through Research (CIFRE) with the company, on the basis of which the company receives a grant.

CIFRE is funded by the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research, which has commissioned the ANRT to implement the scheme.

To find out more about the CIFRE procedure and the benefits of the scheme, please sign up for the seminar by filling out the following form.

The seminar will be given in English but you are free to ask any questions in French.
