Listeriosis is an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria that mainly occurs after the consumption of contaminated food. Approximately four to six cases per million population are recorded on average each year in Western countries, with around 400 cases each year in France. Dr. Caroline Charlier, a member of the team led by Prof. Marc Lecuit (Paris Descartes University) - both working in the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Necker Enfants Malades Hospital (AP-HP) and the Biology of Infection Unit (Institut Pasteur/Inserm) - published a landmark study on this infection in the January 27 issue of the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases. This research has resulted in the characterization and clinical presentation of the disease and the identification of prognostic factors.
