On December 6, 2024, the auditorium of the CIS hosted the 12th PhD graduation ceremony for the doctoral graduates of the Institut Pasteur. This event, filled with emotions and shared moments, brought together families, friends, mentors, scientists, and academic and diplomatic representatives to celebrate the new doctors from the Institut Pasteur and the Pasteur Network.
Some figures about the 2024 cohort:
• 40 doctoral graduates
• 6 from the Pasteur Network
• 9 from the PPU program (Pasteur-Paris University)
• 20 represented nationalities
Ceremony highlight: The Speech by the Guest of Honor
Professor Shankar Balasubramanian, Herchel Smith Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, shared his journey and answered questions from the graduates. A renowned expert in the field of nucleic acids and the inventor of next-generation DNA sequencing technology, he inspired the audience and delivered a powerful message about the importance of scientific curiosity and the unpredictable nature of research careers:
“In science, unintended consequences of curiosity-driven exploration often lead to interest in things that make an impact. It’s important for young scientists to pursue science because they’re curious and interested in something that might be important (…) and there is a chance that it will have impact at some point in the future. (...) I look forward to seeing what some of you will accomplish in the next 30 years."
