2016 Chairs of Excellence

With its illustrious past, outstanding research and wide-ranging missions, the Institut Pasteur occupies a unique position on the global research landscape. The Institut Pasteur successfully combines fundamental research, its core activity, with the practical application of this research in the field of medicine and public health and the development of teaching activities and industrial partnerships. The Institut Pasteur International Network is also a key part of its history and its work.

One of the priority goals set out in the 2014-2018 strategic plan is to improve the quality and attractiveness of careers at the Institut Pasteur. To this end, the Institut Pasteur decided to issue its first call for applications for "Chairs of Excellence". The aim of these chairs is to recognize the excellence of the research carried out by the Institut Pasteur's scientists in their given category.

Three levels of chair are available:

  • Louis Pasteur Chairs, for professors. Holders of a Louis Pasteur Chair receive an annual stipend of €20,000 (gross).

  • Elie Metchnikoff Chairs, for heads of research structures. Holders of an Elie Metchnikoff Chair receive an annual stipend of €15,000 (gross).

  • Charles Nicolle Chairs, for scientists that do not head a research structure. Holders of a Charles Nicolle Chair receive an annual stipend of €10,000 (gross).

These chairs are awarded for a three-year period on the basis of research excellence and for a specific research project that lasts for the entire chairship period. The recommendations of the "Chair Award Committee", which includes members of the COMESP (the Committee for the Assessment of Staff Scientific Activities) and Scientific Council, and members outside the Institut Pasteur, enabled Senior Management to establish the list of recipients.
