You may have heard that avian influenza has been increasing among animals in France over the past few months. What is the risk that this infection could spread to humans? And how does that happen?

The Institut Pasteur offers a dedicated webinar to help you understand the pandemic threats posed by influenza viruses, hosted by Professor Marie-Anne Rameix-Welti, head of the National Reference Center for Respiratory Infections.

Every influenza pandemic originates from complex events: the ability of influenza viruses to evolve rapidly, their circulation in multiple animal reservoirs, and occasional crossing of species barriers. Professor Rameix-Welti will explain:

  • The mechanisms of influenza virus variability
  • The role of animal reservoirs in the evolution of influenza viruses
  • Species barriers and the adaptations required for transmission to humans
  • The organization and challenges of monitoring zoonotic influenza viruses in humans
  • An update on H5Nx viruses

Marie-Anne Rameix-Welti is a professor of virology at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Paris Saclay. She currently leads the National Reference Center for Respiratory Viruses at Institut Pasteur for Northern France, as well as a research team studying the replication mechanisms of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). During her training, she studied medicine at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital and sciences at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, then completed her doctoral thesis on influenza viruses at the Institut Pasteur.

This webinar will be held in French on Friday, January 16, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM (CET), via Zoom video conference. (45 minutes presentation + 30 minutes Q&A).
