Ebola, plague, SARS… Emerging viruses, an unpredictable threat

One hundred years after the deadliest influenza pandemic in history – the Spanish Flu of 1918 – emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases continue to threaten public health worldwide. During the international Emerging Infections and Pandemic Risk conference held at the Institut Pasteur on June 21 and 22, an Ebola outbreak ended in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Institut Pasteur recently sent a young researcher to the country to gain an understanding of the outbreak and help tackle any upcoming outbreaks at source.
