BICENTENARY

Continued celebrations for the bicentenary of Louis Pasteur's birth – Save the date: upcoming conferences on December 7 and 8, 2022

  • Conference – "Epidemics, pandemics: a never-ending story?" on December 7, 2022 at the Institut Pasteur

To mark the bicentenary of Louis Pasteur's birth, the Institut Pasteur is organizing a day-long conference open to all on December 7, starting at 9am in the CIS auditorium.

The aim is to analyze the major epidemics that have plagued humanity since its earliest days and to identify lessons that can be learned to help us prepare more effectively for future outbreaks.

Plague, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV, COVID-19 – comparing the perspectives of bacteriologists, virologists, parasitologists, epidemiologists, anthropologists, geneticists and veterinarians will help shed light on past and current epidemics and improve preparedness for future outbreaks, at a time of globalization and climate change.

The event is free and open to all (subject to available seats), but prior registration is required. The conference will take place in the CIS auditorium.

  • Conference – "Pasteur, a visionary" on December 8, 2022 at the Institut de France

The day after the open conference on the Institut Pasteur campus, another event to mark the bicentenary year of Louis Pasteur's birth will be taking place. The French Academy of Sciences and the Académie française, in partnership with France Mémoire and with the support of the Simone and Cino Del Duca Foundation and the Christophe and Rodolphe Mérieux Foundation, wanted to pay tribute to Louis Pasteur by jointly organizing a conference for the public that will explore the highlights of Pasteur's achievements and show how they resonate with science today.

The conference will take place on Thursday December 8, 2022 from 9.45am in the André et Liliane Bettencourt auditorium at the Institut de France (3 rue Mazarine, 75006 Paris).

The conference will be divided into two main parts: the morning, led by Mathieu Vidard, will be specifically aimed at high school students, with a group of penultimate-year students presenting short films produced in class with the help of their teachers and the support of the "La main à la pâte" Foundation for each of the four themes covered (chemistry, viruses, the world of microbes and vaccines) to accompany the speakers' presentations.

The afternoon will be aimed at a wider audience (teachers, researchers, politicians, journalists, university students, etc.) and will set out to demonstrate the modernity of Pasteur's approach – the concept of global health, links between basic and applied research, science at an international level, science and society, etc.

The event is open to all but prior registration is required. Registration will open in September 2022.
