HIV controllers: the CD8+ T lymphocytes elucidated

HIV researchers are currently tackling the major challenge of unraveling the mechanisms that enable some patients, known as "HIV controllers", to control the virus and resist the effects of infection. Improving understanding in this area could pave the way for new therapeutic strategies. Two studies conducted by the team led by the Institut Pasteur's Dr. Asier Sáez-Cirión and his colleagues from Paris Descartes, Paris Sud and Paul Sabatier Toulouse Universities, the CEA, Inserm and the Paris public hospital network (AP-HP) have shed new light on the specific characteristics of CD8+ T lymphocytes and the factors that optimize their function in HIV controllers. This research is supported by the ANRS, the MSDAVENIR foundation, the European Commission and Sidaction. The findings were presented on July 25 at the 9th IAS Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2017), run by the International AIDS Society and the ANRS, which was held in Paris from July 23 to 26, 2017.
