From scientific cooperation to global health: focus on the Brazilian parasitologist Luis Rey, committed to protecting the living world

On June 18, 2025, the Institut Pasteur will be hosting a film screening and debate open to the general public to shine a light on a key figure in French-Brazilian scientific cooperation: Luis Rey, a Brazilian pioneer in the field of parasitology.

To mark the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Brazil, in 2025 the two countries are organizing the "France-Brazil Crossover Season." The aim is to reflect together on how to achieve a fairer, greener, more compassionate future. This year of collaboration will be guided by three broad themes: climate and environmental transition, diversity of societies and dialog with Africa, and democracy and fair globalization.

To celebrate the France-Brazil Season, the Institut Pasteur will be showcasing a key chapter in French-Brazilian scientific cooperation with an evening dedicated to the eminent Brazilian scientist and parasitologist Luis Rey.

The evening will feature the screening of the documentary "Rey, ciência em defesa da vida" ("Rey, science in defense of life") produced by Fiocruz, followed by a round table on a highly topical issue: the relationship between climate change and health.

Program

•   5–5.30pm: Arrival of participants

•   5.30–6.30pm: Screening of the documentary "Rey, ciência em defesa da vida"

•   6.30–7.30pm: Round table on the impacts of climate change on health

•  6.30–6.40pm: Introductory message from André Maciel, Minister-Counselor at the Brazilian Embassy in France, and Ambassador Yves Saint-Geours, Chairman of the Institut Pasteur Board of Governors  

•    6.40–7.10pm: Discussions between:

o    Professor Anna-Bella Failloux, Head of the Arboviruses and Insect Vectors laboratory at the Institut Pasteur,
o    Éléonore Caroit, Member of the National Assembly for French residents in Latin America and the Caribbean and Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the National Assembly,
o    Marina Saraiva, co-producer of the documentary.

•    7.10–7.30pm: Question and answer session

•    7.30–8.30pm: Cocktail reception
 
The event starts at 5.30pm on Wednesday June 18 in the Émile Duclaux lecture hall at the Institut Pasteur.
