Keep your afternoon free on September 8, 2023 to take part in the conference "Reducing the number of animals used in research: is the choice of method a regulatory, ethical or scientific necessity?"

For the third year in a row, the Institut Pasteur's Committee for Ethics in Animal Experimentation (CETEA) and Center for Animal Resources and Research (C2RA) are jointly organizing a conference on the use of animals in research. This year's conference will take place on September 8. It will be open to all and available to follow online, via Teams,  or in the Duclaux Lecture Hall, from 2 to 5.30pm.

Several specific examples of approaches to reduce the number of animals used in research will be presented and will serve as a basis to discuss existing resources that can help meet this aim at the Institut Pasteur and what can be done to make further progress. Participants will also discuss cases in which alternatives to the use of animal models are not possible.

To bring the afternoon to a close, the organizers will have the pleasure of welcoming Mathilde Dessaux-Lecompte (from the French Parliamentary Office For Scientific and Technological Assessment – OPECST) to give a lecture outlining the processes that lead to new regulations in this field. Since 2009, OPECST has been responsible for two reports on the use of animals in research and alternatives to animal testing (2009, "Animal testing in Europe: Alternatives, ethics and governance." 2019, "The use of animals in research and alternatives to animal testing: current situation and future prospects").

2.45-3.15pm: The use of invertebrates/complementarities of approaches used on mice – Emmanuel Farge, Institut Curie

3.15-3.45pm: Meta-research to avoid needless use of animals – Julia Menon, PreclinicalTrials.eu

3.45-4.25pm: Round table/discussions on the best strategy to encourage and facilitate replacement at the Institut Pasteur: Thierry Decelle (DCL solutions); Mallory Perrin Wolff (Institut Pasteur)

4.25-4.40pm: Break
