Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
This year marks the bicentenary of the birth of Louis Pasteur. His reputation speaks for itself: streets and schools now bear his name, not just in France but in countries all over the world. His immense legacy can even be appreciated in our homes, with "pasteurized" products derived from one of his discoveries. The same is true of hygiene, which took on such importance during the pandemic – it was Pasteur who laid the scientific foundations for hygiene principles. Louis Pasteur himself always avoided shaking hands, and if ever he made an exception he would wash them immediately. While Pasteur is famous for his rabies vaccine – which earned him the title "benefactor of humanity" –, the full breadth of his scientific achievements is less well known, despite the fact that they are still having an impact on our daily lives and on research and medicine.
The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors – the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) – has just been published and is taking the opportunity of the bicentenary to offer an overview of the history of the Institut Pasteur's founder.
