Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
On Monday April 23, the Institut Pasteur held a ceremony to mark the appointment of Raymond Schinazi as Affiliated Professor at the Institut Pasteur.
Opening the proceedings, Hélène Strick-Marchand gave a presentation of Raymond Schinazi's career, his many discoveries and the scientific impact of his work. This was followed by a talk by Raymond Schinazi about his discoveries and the development of drugs to treat HIV and hepatitis B and C. He outlined the various HIV treatments that he has been involved in developing, which have saved the lives of millions of patients, before describing a successful hepatitis C treatment that he helped develop by setting up a biotech company, Pharmasset. Raymond Schinazi concluded by speaking about his current research on the development of new therapeutic possibilities for hepatitis B, which has shown promising results in mice.
The ceremony was followed by a cocktail reception in the Salle des Actes, during which Institut Pasteur President Stewart Cole paid tribute to Raymond Schinazi's remarkable career and his many contributions to science. With this title of Affiliated Professor, Raymond Schinazi will pursue his commitment to the Institut Pasteur's work and help boost its international visibility.
The Institut Pasteur introduced the status of Affiliated Professor in 2016 with the aim of formally recognizing various leading scientists who are professors at their home establishment for higher education and research and are also closely involved in work for the Institut Pasteur or collaborative activities with its teams, but are not in a position to be recruited by the institute. The title of Affiliated Professor may be proposed for a leading scientist who has given the Institut Pasteur the benefit of his or her expertise and reputation and contributed to the Institut Pasteur's visibility and renown in a specific field. The title is a way for the Institut Pasteur to show its appreciation and recognition of the work carried out by these professors.
