The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors – the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) – contains a special feature on allergies. More than one in every four people in Europe currently suffer from allergies, and WHO predicts that by 2050 half of all those living in industrialized countries will be affected. Allergies are caused by a deregulation of the immune system, which "overreacts" to a wide range of substances known as allergens which can be found in the air, in food, in insect venom, in medicines and in objects we come into contact with. Some allergies can give rise to extremely severe reactions. Research on allergies is being carried out in several Institut Pasteur laboratories with the aim of unraveling and shedding new light on the mechanisms involved in allergic reactions. Recent findings are raising hopes for improvements in treatment for allergies.
