95th issue of the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" out now!

lip95_novembre_2016_autisme.png The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors - the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) - has a special feature on autism, a common syndrome that affects 1 in every 100 children at birth. The symptoms of autism and the degree of severity vary widely, so much so that the preferred term is now "autism spectrum disorder". Some specialists even refer to "autisms" in the plural rather than autism.

At the Institut Pasteur, a team of around thirty people in the Neuroscience Department made a pioneering breakthrough with the discovery of genes associated with autism, and the team is now working to identify these genes and understand their role. The scientists are from a wide range of disciplines including genetics, psychiatry, cellular neurobiology, bioinformatics, neuroimaging and social sciences, which means they approach the challenge of understanding autism from different angles.
