Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
Nearly two years ago, the Institut Pasteur boosted the prototyping capabilities of scientists on its Paris campus by setting up a fabrication laboratory or "Fab Lab", a collaborative space for the development of varied, innovative projects designed to provide answers to scientific enigmas.
Part of the Technical Department in the Technical Resources and Environment Department and run by prototyping engineer Albane Imbert, the Fab Lab aims to provide expert support throughout the project cycle, from identification of needs to prototype design. The Fab Lab and its team are on hand to offer guidance and specific training and to work with you to get your projects off the ground.
The Fab Lab moved to its dedicated premises in the glass atrium of the Metchnikoff building in October 2018. Since then it has been involved in several projects in fields ranging from cell culture to imaging, neurology, microfluidics and virology.
In the past year, 40 training sessions have been run by the Fab Lab to enable scientists to use the equipment – which includes 3D printers, a numerical control machine and laser cutters – independently. The Fab Lab has also worked on some 50 projects, such as:
Participation in the "Designing the Living" exhibition at the Pompidou Center, with Olivier Schwartz and Timothée Bruel
Participation in the Inter-Pasteurian Concerted Action (ACIP) "Ethomos", with Jean-Bernard Duchemin (Institut Pasteur de Guyane), Christian Vestergaard and Rabiou Labbo (CERMES Niger)
Participation in the Transversal Research Program (PTR) "Sherlock4hat", with Brice Rotureau, Lucy Glover, Noël Tordo (Institut Pasteur de Guinée) and Marie-Noëlle Ungeheuer
Participation in the publication Live Mouse Tracker: real-time behavioral analysis of groups of mice with depth camera and machine learning in Nature Biomedical Engineering
To celebrate a busy first year of projects, support and partnerships, the Fab Lab team is pleased to invite you to its first Open Desk, on November 21 from 3 to 5pm, at its premises in the glass atrium of the Metchnikoff building. Drinks will be served from 4pm.
Open Desk sessions, organized by the Fab Lab to encourage dialog and collaboration, give you an opportunity to express your needs and optimize support for your projects, will take place every Tuesday from 2 to 4pm.
