  •  Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin elected as a Fellow of the Optica Foundation

Based in Washington, Optica is a non-profit foundation that promotes research and new advances in optics and photonics.

Optica has three categories of members:

• Honorary Members are scientists who have made a unique, seminal contribution to the field of optics.

• Fellows are members whose research has contributed to the advancement of optics and photonics.

• Senior Members are recognized for their experience, professional accomplishments and service within the optics and photonics field and their active involvement in Optica.

The Board of Directors of "Optica, Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide" recently elected 109 members from 24 countries in the category "2023 Fellows."

They include Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin, Head of the Biological Image Analysis Unit, recognized for his significant contributions to biological image analysis. He is the first Institut Pasteur scientist to be appointed to this category.

The new Optica Fellows will be honored at conferences and events organized by the foundation throughout 2023.

  • Jean-Pierre Changeux receives the Erasmus Medal from the Academia Europaea

The Academia Europaea's Erasmus Medal is awarded to a European scholar who has maintained an outstanding level of international scholarship as recognized by peers over a sustained period. It is perhaps the highest recognition for purely scholarly achievements that the Academy can bestow on a scholar. The medal is awarded at the Annual Conference of the Academy, and on that occasion the recipient gives the annual Erasmus Lecture.

This year, the 2023 Erasmus Medal is awarded to Jean-Pierre Changeux, Emeritus Professor at the Collège de France, former holder of the Chair in Cellular Communications (1976-2006) and Honorary Professor at the Institut Pasteur.

Professor Changeux will receive the medal at the Annual Conference of Academia Europaea, which will be held in Munich from October 9 to 11, 2023. At the conference he will deliver the Academia Europaea – Heinz-Nixdorf Erasmus Lecture.

  • Charles Baroud, winner of the 2022 Jaffé Prize awarded by the Institut de France

The Jaffé Prize is an annual prize awarded on a proposal from the French Academy of Sciences in recognition of research or experiments that contribute to the progress and well-being of humanity.

It is awarded alternately to:

-    a researcher for research in pure or applied mechanical and computer sciences, and a researcher for pure or applied integrative biology research, for one year;
-    a researcher for experiments in the field of sciences of the universe, and a researcher for experiments in cellular and molecular biology, for the other year.

This year, the prize was awarded to Charles Baroud, a Professor at the École polytechnique, a scientist in the Hydrodynamics Laboratory (LadHyX – CNRS/École polytechnique) and Head of the Physical Microfluidics and Bioengineering Unit (Institut Pasteur/École polytechnique), for his basic research on multiphysics coupling in complex geometry and his applied research in the area of microdroplet techniques. In addition to his articles, his work has led to a portfolio of patents, as well as two startups.

  • Six Institut Pasteur scientists on the Highly Cited Researchers 2022 list

Each year, Clarivate Analytics (producer of Web of Science), which specializes in analyzing scientific production, publishes a list of the most cited researchers, in other words those who have had a significant influence in 21 research fields by publishing multiple highly cited articles over the past decade.

In 2022, 6,938 scientists were selected on the basis of the number of highly cited articles that they produced over an 11-year period, from January 2011 to December 2021, either in one of the 21 research fields or in several fields if they are involved in multidisciplinary research.

The Highly Cited Researchers list has a significant impact as it serves as a basis for several international rankings, including the Shanghai ranking, in which it counts for 20% of the overall score given to each university.

This year, six Institut Pasteur scientists were included on the list: James Di Santo, Gérard Eberl, Mart Krupovic, Hugo Mouquet, Felix Rey and Olivier Schwartz.
