Film screenings and meeting for World Diabetes Day

The Scientific Information Resources Center (CeRIS) and the Revive LabEx are joining forces for World Diabetes Day and would like to invite you to an exclusive preview screening of the short film Diabetes and Stem Cells followed by the documentary Pour quelques barres de chocolat.

Two sessions will be held on Tuesday November 14: 11.30am and 5pm* in the Jules Bordet room (building 67, Metchnikoff, ground floor).

*The 5pm screening will include a discussion led by Didier Montarras from the Department of Developmental and Stem Cell Biology.

These two films help us understand diabetes from two different angles – from the viewpoint of scientists and from the day-to-day experience of patients.

  • Diabetes and Stem Cells, 2017 (11 mins)

Diabetes: how can stem cells be used to treat the condition?
This scientific film, which includes beautiful hand-drawn animation, provides a clear explanation of the progress and prospects of research on the use of stem cells in diabetes therapies. The film, produced in connection with the EU project HumEn (of which the Revive LabEx is a partner), will be simultaneously broadcast on November 14 by several institutions across Europe that are working in this field.
The film is in English with French subtitles.

  • Pour quelques barres de chocolat, directed by Vanessa Gauthier, 2016 (64 mins)

1128311940.jpg What does it mean to be diabetic today?
This film makes for fascinating viewing. The director discovered that she was diabetic when she was just seven years old. At that age she didn't really understand what it was all about, but judging from the adults' reactions she realized that it was serious. The director goes on a summer camp with a group of children all affected by this invisible condition. Over the course of two weeks, she observes the daily life and thoughts of these diabetic children. This film is a poetic introduction to the topic – as the saying goes, out of the mouths of babes... Compelling!
Winner of the 2016 "Talents de Patients" Award.
The film is in French with English subtitles.
