Upcoming "Pasteur Medicine Quarter-Hour" plague and cholera special on November 17

Every month, the Center for Translational Science runs a "Pasteur Medicine Quarter-Hour" session, where two doctors are invited to give a brief presentation to Institut Pasteur scientists on the diseases they are involved in treating. The doctors start by outlining one or more clinical cases, then provide a short description of the disease and conclude by looking at a series of unanswered questions that need to be addressed.

The next session will take place on Tuesday November 17 at 5.30pm, online only via Teams.

Program:

  • Plague – Anne-Sophie Le Guern (Institut Pasteur)

  • Cholera – Marie Laure Quilici (Institut Pasteur)

As we embark on the second lockdown in our history, two Heads of National Reference Centers talk to us about two diseases which had a major impact in the past: plague and cholera.

How did people react at the time? Why did these outbreaks stop occurring in developed countries? Where and how are they circulating at the moment? How are they diagnosed? How are they treated?

Anne-Sophie Le Guern is Head of the National Reference Center for Plague and other Yersinia Infections, which monitors Yersinia infections. She trained as a pharmacist. She is also a member of the Yersinia Research Unit and the Yersinia WHOCC, led by Javier Pizarro-Cerdá.

Marie-Laure Quilici is Head of the National Reference Center for Vibrios and Cholera, which carries out microbiological surveillance of cholera and other Vibrio infections. She is a member of WHO's Global Task Force on Cholera Control. She is also a member of the Enteric Bacterial Pathogens Unit, led by Francois-Xavier Weill.
