Registration opens for two MOOCs: Human and Social Sciences & Epidemic Management, Malaria

•    Human and Social Sciences & Epidemic Management MOOC: first edition

The fight against infectious diseases is based not only on biological aspects, but also on a social and cultural understanding of communicable diseases. This is why the Digital Education Office invites you to register for the first edition of the Social Sciences and Humanities & Epidemic management MOOC, which will run from November 19, 2024 to November 18, 2025. This MOOC is directed by Hichem Ben Hassine, Cyrine Bouabid and Chiarella Mattern.

Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) play a crucial role in the management of epidemics. They enable us to understand the social and cultural dimensions of diseases, which are essential for an effective response from healthcare systems.

This MOOC has been designed by an interdisciplinary team. It highlights the importance of the contributions of SSH to the management of epidemics. You will explore qualitative methods in SSH, their application in the context of health emergencies and the associated methodological and ethical challenges.

This MOOC provides you with approaches for mobilising scientific data to ensure that healthcare interventions are adapted to local contexts. Through case studies, you will discover how SSH contribute to research on epidemics such as HIV, Ebola and COVID-19. We will also discuss the importance of interdisciplinarity in the management of these health emergencies. Drawing on lessons learned from previous epidemics, we will discuss strategies for improving the response to future health crises.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

•    Demonstrate the contribution of SSH to the response to epidemics
•    Master the key concepts of qualitative research in SSH applied to health
•    Understand the ethical and methodological challenges of qualitative research
•    Selecting appropriate methods for data generation in the context of a health emergency
•    Discover the principles and challenges of various approaches to disseminating scientific knowledge and maximising the impact of research
