Doct-Office: a look back at the second edition of the Welcome Day – focus on a year of support for PhD students

On October 12, the second edition of the Welcome Day for first-year PhD students at the Institut Pasteur was held.

Organized by the Education Department, this event was attended by more than 50 new PhD students out of a total of 74 who have arrived at the Institut Pasteur since the start of the 2018-2019 academic year to begin their doctoral studies.

During the afternoon, the participants attended several presentations that outlined the academic and social support provided by the Institut Pasteur for its PhD students. They also had the opportunity to chat to some of the PhD students who attended the first edition in 2017 and were invited along to the event on October 12 to share their experience of life on the Institut Pasteur campus. It was a good chance for networking!

The afternoon presentations focused on academic and non academic carreer with presentations by Thomas Gregor, head of the Physics of biological function, and by Albane Imbert from the Institut Pasteur FabLab.

The day drew to a close with a drinks reception – a great opportunity for the students to get to know other new PhD students in their year at the Institut Pasteur.

This event is now a firm fixture in the calendar of the Doct-Office, part of the Department of Education. It reassures PhD students that they can rely on valuable support and encouragement throughout their studies.

The Doctoral Students' Office – or Doct-Office – was set up in the first quarter of 2017 with the aim of creating a real sense of community among the PhD students at the Institut Pasteur. For more than a year now, it has given these young researchers the opportunity to attend scientific seminars and symposiums, take part in international video conferences and get involved in forums. Every month, it also organizes a journal club, where a PhD student can present the latest developments in his or her research. Last May, it ran the first "scientific writing workshop" at the Institut Pasteur, to offer guidance to PhD students about the key points to bear in mind when writing scientific articles.Doct-office participates to the organization of the next Young Research in Life Science conference which will take place in May 2019 at the Institut Pasteur.

The Doct-Office also lets young researchers know about the social, sports and cultural activities they can get involved in on campus, especially via the Works Committee, the sports club and La Pasteurale.
