Antibiotics: when bacteria fight back

Who hasn't taken antibiotics at least once in their lifetime? It is clear that these drugs, which combat a wide range of bacterial infections including pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, meningitis, urine infections and septicemia, save millions of lives. But their efficacy is under real threat, and the World Health Organization warns that "one day no antibiotics may be left to treat common bacterial infections".
