Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
Since its inception in 2006, the Georges, Jacques and Elias Canetti Award has supported Institut Pasteur scientists, with the aim of promoting a better life for the global community. Ten scientists have been honored for their research on infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis.
The 2015 laureate is Claude Parsot, research director at the Institut Pasteur, where he works in the Molecular Microbial Pathogenesis Unit led by Philippe Sansonetti. His research focuses on the characterization of virulence factors of Shigella flexneri, the bacterium that causes bacillary dysentery (shigellosis) in humans. His work contributed to the discovery of a system used to inject bacterial proteins into host cells. These effector proteins enable the bacterium to hijack cell functions in order, on the one hand, to enter the cells and replicate, and on the other, to interfere with the immune response triggered by the infection.
