The Department for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: two and a half years of action, and an ongoing commitment

At the Institut Pasteur, every career path is different

From scientific roles to research support functions, more than 80 nationalities are represented at the Institut Pasteur – so many career paths, experiences, outlooks and perspectives that come together every day.

This diversity is an asset. It becomes a strength when everyone can feel respected, recognized and truly in their place. Because the diversity of outlooks, backgrounds and experiences also contributes to the innovation, creativity and excellence of the Institut Pasteur.
In February 2024, this commitment reached a new milestone with the creation of the Department for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). A cross-cutting department serving the entire Pasteurian community, the DEI Department carries forward and drives the institutional ambition of building a working environment that is open, fair and respectful of each person's uniqueness.

But these values cannot simply be decreed. They are built over time, through practices, decisions and interactions.

Since its creation, the DEI Department has launched numerous initiatives to advance this ambition. The Department's first activity report looks back at the ground covered, the initiatives undertaken and the first achievements, while also paving the way for future prospects.

This DEI approach is not, however, merely a matter of taking stock. It is built over time, through listening, understanding and the gradual evolution of practices.

This is the guiding thread of the DEI Department's action: understand, listen, act.

Understanding: giving everyone the keys to act more effectively

Deciphering the mechanisms that can give rise to inequalities, deconstructing the biases that sometimes influence perceptions, and grasping the challenges related to diversity and inclusion constitute a first lever for action.

It is in this spirit that an e-learning module on DEI fundamentals will be rolled out to the entire Pasteurian community from October onwards. Its aim: to enable everyone to gain a better understanding of these issues and to acquire concrete pointers to incorporate into their daily professional lives.

Listening: giving a voice to diverse career paths

Understanding the issues is essential. Giving a voice to those who embody this diversity is just as important.

From October, the Beyond the Lab Coat podcast will give a voice to the campus. Beyond job titles, roles and lab coats, it will shine a light on the plurality of career paths, experiences and personalities that make the Institut so rich.

Because discovering other people's stories also broadens our perspective on our own community.

Acting: driving change in practices

Understanding and listening take on their full meaning when they translate into concrete action. As part of this dynamic, a new DEI page is now available on the Institut's ePasteur intranet. It provides a point of entry to keep up to date with the Department's news, as well as offering resources and tools to gain a better understanding of the issues and to support the Pasteurian community in their day-to-day practices.

Among the first resources available is the Inclusive Communication Guide.

This document, developed with the support of the Department of Communications and Public Affairs and the Department of Philanthropy, contains a series of pointers and advice for employees who wish to adopt oral and written communication practices that represent the Pasteurian community in all its diversity and strengthen our collective commitment to a more equitable and inclusive society.

The majority of the suggestions in this guide have already been implemented in the Institut's external and internal communication practices, within the limits of the language rules in force, the Institut's institutional obligations and other key principles of our policy, in particular the accessibility of our content.

The departments concerned remain available to support you in getting to grips with these tools, so as to facilitate their integration into everyday communication practices.

Like languages, this guide is destined to evolve. It will be regularly updated and enriched, based on the usage, practices and feedback of the Pasteurian community.

An approach built with you

Understand, listen, act: these three dimensions are not isolated steps but a continuous movement.

The implementation of the DEI policy is a long-term endeavor. It evolves with the Institut, with practices and with the challenges of our times. It can only take on its full meaning if it is built together with the entire Pasteurian community.
