Fire risk management on campus

This year, 1,757 of you took part in the evacuation drills held on the Institut Pasteur campus and the Hearing Institute site. This is a record number for the Institut Pasteur. The Security Department would like to thank you for your participation.

The aim of these drills was to:
•    Raise awareness among staff of evacuation procedures,
•    Give staff a chance to hear and recognize the alarm,
•    Apply emergency procedures,
•    Check that alarm systems are working properly.

This year, the Security Department would particularly like to emphasize the following points to optimize our procedures for managing fire risks:

1.    Available training

•    Fire warden training

The aim of this training is to show fire wardens what to do in the event of an evacuation.

The role of fire wardens is to guide people to the most appropriate emergency exits (avoiding affected or smoke-filled areas) and accompany them to the meeting point.

Designated fire wardens wear an armband so that the emergency services can identify which staff can confirm whether or not an entire floor has been evacuated.

The armband must be visible and should not be taken off until all staff have returned to their offices.

Right way to wear an armband

Wrong way to wear an armband

The Security Department is launching a new recruitment campaign for fire wardens.
If you are interested, feel free to send an email to surete@pasteur.fr so that we can register you and organize training.

•    Using extinguishers

These sessions help develop employees' ability to analyze the situation and react appropriately, with the aim of extinguishing different types of fire with the appropriate extinguishers.

These 90-minute sessions are open to all employees interested in learning how to use a fire extinguisher.

You can sign up now to the training sessions in using extinguishers that are scheduled to take place on campus on October 11 and 13 by clicking here. Then enter "EXTINCTEUR" (EXTINGUISHER) in the search bar at the top of the page.

2.    Problems observed

Below you will find a reminder of the main issues raised during the drills

•    Doors wedged open
Wedging fire doors open is prohibited. If these doors are not closed and a fire breaks out, the flames and smoke will not be contained and will quickly spread to the entire building.

More generally, it is also prohibited to wedge open any doors with access control for safety reasons.

Fire door not wedged open: acceptable

Fire door wedged open: unacceptable

If you are in a dangerous situation, the equipment below can save you time:

The red box raises the alarm with the Security Operations Center.

The green box can be used to unlock an emergency exit in the event of an emergency.

•    Blocking emergency exits

Exits and keep clear zones must be kept permanently clear so that they can be used at any time. A blocked emergency exit increases the time it takes to evacuate a building and represents a serious risk for the building's occupants.

The Security Department would like to thank you for taking part and looks forward to seeing you at future training sessions.
