Interactive lecture “Disability in higher education: strategies for inclusion”

Image

Disability in higher education is a complex issue with disclosure rates amongst staff and students in academia remaining lower than in the general population. In this presentation, Nicole Brown presents key findings from her extensive research into the lived experience of disabled, chronically ill and/or neurodivergent staff and students in higher education. She begins her presentation with the outline of definitions of disability according to the legal/ medical and social models. She then explores specifically the cost-benefit analysis that disabled, chronically ill and/or neurodivergent staff and students employ when navigating the higher education context. Brown further considers scenarios where disabled, chronically ill and/or neurodivergent members of academia experience discrimination before highlighting some practical initiatives and strategies to foster accessibility for all.
