133rd issue of the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" out now: "When pathogens target the brain"

The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors – the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) – contains a special report on "Pathogens that infect the brain."

The brain, the epicenter of our thoughts and emotions, also represents a target. Despite its biological defenses, infectious agents manage to infiltrate it using remarkably sophisticated strategies. The consequences can be devastating and even fatal, ranging from meningitis and encephalitis to irreversible neurological damage. Yet many infections still evade diagnosis, and treatments struggle to cross the barriers that protect this vital organ. The Institut Pasteur is on the front line in tackling these threats. Its research and public health teams contribute to national and international surveillance networks, combining their expertise as they rise to the challenges in this field. Epidemiological monitoring, genomics, nanoparticles and experimental models are all opening up new avenues to improve the detection, treatment and prevention of brain infections and perhaps even offer solutions for certain neurodegenerative diseases.
