2026 Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda: what you need to know about Bundibugyo virus
An Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo species has been circulating since March 2026, originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) before spreading to Uganda. With more than 827 confirmed cases and 194 deaths as of June 16, this outbreak, one of the most severe ever witnessed, represents a serious risk for the region. No specific vaccine or treatment exists for this strain, and the late detection of the first cases is making the response more difficult today.
