Institut Pasteur open science blog: contributions from postdoctoral fellows

In May 2025, the editorial team of the Institut Pasteur's open science blog, initially composed of librarians from the CeRIS,* gained a new member with the arrival of Maria Gutiérrez Sánchez, a postdoctoral fellow in the Molecular Parasitology and Signaling Unit. Maria was integrated into the team on a career exploration placement coordinated by the CARE Department and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in early 2025. The aim of these placements is to support career development for postdoctoral fellows and improve their employability. They give them the opportunity for part-time practical experience in research support departments.

Maria's articles, grouped together in a new section entitled "Tales from a postdoc," explore the various challenges related to open science in an off-beat yet science-backed style. Given her background, she has particularly focused on the role of open science in Latin America. Her articles are available in French and Spanish:

  • Hands up if you heard about open science during your PhD? A discussion among peers [read the Spanish version]

  • Free access to knowledge: a Latin-American perspective on open science models [read the Spanish version]

  • The commodification of research: the Peruvian case of paper mills [read the Spanish version]

  • OpenSci Champions: promoting open, multilingual science driven by open-source software [read the Spanish version]

  • When the article costs more than the experiment: dilemmas surrounding open access in Argentina [see the Spanish version]

  • Towards a reform of research assessment practices: reflections from a postdoc's perspective [read the Spanish version]

  • Developing an ecosystem of open data in health: challenges and prospects in Latin America [read the Spanish version]

  • Opening tools to open up science [read the Spanish version]

The CeRIS team was delighted to work with Maria until December 2025, when she completed her postdoctoral fellowship.

And the team is pleased to announce that they will be welcoming another postdoc in 2026, Lesley Caitlin Martin, who will also be completing a career exploration placement.

To find out more about the career exploration placement program, the newsletter team will soon be publishing a dedicated article focusing on the 2025 report about the program, with testimonials from those who have tried their hand at new professions.
