Check out "Unlock Tech Transfer," new series of explainer videos about innovation process and technology transfer work

"If I patent my discovery, I won't be able to publish." "Technology transfer doesn't apply to basic research." "I'm here to do science, not business." Really? You may have heard these views – or held them yourself – over the course of your scientific career. Technology transfer is often shrouded in misconceptions that can prevent innovations coming out of our laboratories. The aim of the "Unlock Tech Transfer" video series is to give scientists clear information about the key stages in the innovation process, together with practical advice and input from experts.

To better understand how a scientific discovery becomes a practical application, the Technology Transfer and Industrial Partnership Department (DARRI) and Pharmaceutiques propose a series of explanatory videos entitled ‘Unlock Tech Transfer’.

In four episodes, this series presents the essential steps in the innovation process:

•    Episode 1: Detecting research applications
With the participation of Nicolas Torno, who shares his expertise on how to identify the innovation potential of your research.

•    Episode 2: Protecting inventions
Nicolas Torno explains the various intellectual property protection mechanisms and why they are important when commercializing scientific discoveries.

•    Episode 3: Innovation development and funding
With contributions from Pascale Augé (CEO of Inserm Transfert) and Stanislas de Montlebert (Director of Industrial Partnerships, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Université Paris Cité).

•    Episode 4: Technology transfer to industry partners
Nicolas Torno and Miranda Delmotte (Innovation Coordinator at AP-HP) discuss the key stages in transferring technologies to industry.

This content is part of the ValoCité University Innovation Cluster (PUI) developed by Université Paris Cité, selected for funding under the "France 2030" plan. With a budget of €6 million over four years, ValoCité aims to increase the number of research collaboration agreements with companies and boost the number of startups spun out of its academic laboratories.

How can I access the videos?
Discover the first two episodes of the series, now available to all researchers and staff at the Pasteur Institute:

  • UNLOCK Episode 1 _ Identifying applications for fundamental research
  • UNLOCK Episode 2 _ Protecting inventions from academic research

DARRI hopes that this series will inspire you to take the next step and sign up for the half-day training sessions offered by its teams. The next session will take place in early 2026 and will be held in partnership with IdA and IHU reConnect. The date will be announced shortly.

Feel free to share these videos with your colleagues.
