Lecture and discussion on the theme "The ethics of AI in biological and medical research" with Jean-Pierre Changeux on June 25 from 5 to 7pm

Following the "Artificial intelligence in biology and health" symposium on June 18, 2026 for scientists working at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and biomedical science (see the newsletter on April 3), the Institut Pasteur Ethics Committee and the Institut Pasteur Ethics and Bioethics Department are organizing a lecture entitled “The ethics of AI in biological and medical research.”
The lecture will take place on June 25 in the Ágnes Ullmann lecture hall, from 5 to 7pm. It will be introduced by Margaret Buckingham, Chair of the Institut Pasteur Ethics Committee, and the speaker will be Jean-Pierre Changeux, Emeritus Professor of Neuroscience at the Institut Pasteur and the Collège de France. The aim is to provide an opportunity for an open and collective discussion about a fascinating and rapidly developing sector.
As the use of artificial intelligence becomes increasingly widespread in research and healthcare, it is clear that current efforts to assess the impact on individual freedom and the environment, devise algorithmic regulations and develop AI alignment mechanisms do not fully address the ethical issues involved. In the field of neuroscience, ethical judgment depends on cognitive and emotional skills that AI systems simply do not have. Ethical decisions involve a complex combination of genetic heritage, individual experience, cultural influences and social relationships. Such decisions can only be taken after an open debate between scientists, philosophers, physicians, legal experts and civil society representatives. This lecture, which touches on the fields of neuroscience, moral philosophy and social science, argues that the future of AI will, above all, depend on our collective ability to build fair and equitable institutions in which education, science and international cooperation can promote human dignity and the common good.
It will be run as a hybrid event for those who cannot attend in person on June 25.
We hope that lots of you will come along to the lecture.
