The links between the two institutions go back several decades and were formalized by a first framework agreement in 2010, then a second in 2021. This latest agreement reflects the ongoing active cooperation between the Institut Pasteur and the IRD, while also opening up new avenues for collaboration. It is based on regularly updated roadmaps and a two-tier governance structure, with a steering committee at senior management level and an operational committee chaired by the Institut Pasteur for the first year.

The partnership reflects a shared focus on several topics including vector-borne diseases, One Health, interactions between infectious and chronic diseases, and links between the exposome and health. It is in areas such as these, where the two institutions have complementary expertise, that the most effective partnerships can take shape, linking the laboratory with the field and basic research with public health measures.

Initial avenues for cooperation were identified during discussions following the signing, especially on the future Vector-Borne Diseases Center (CMTV), co-developing major European and international projects, and strengthening the institutions' joint influence within the ERASuD European alliance. The first operational committee meeting will be held before the end of the year to confirm these initial steps and launch activities in these areas.
